Flex Dance Program

Promoting Self-Esteem, Cooperation, And Communication Through Dance

Flex Dance Program (FDP) is an arts and education nonprofit that fosters positive growth among young people in difficult circumstances. FDP employs renowned dancers from local communities to develop routines with our students in order to promote self-esteem, cooperation, and communication. We seek to transform physical energy into positive, nonverbal self-expression that offers an alternative to conflict. Inspired by Jamaican dance (Dancehall and Bruk Up), Flex (Flexn) is a unique form of urban contemporary dance that features contortionist body movements and “no rules” story-telling capabilities. The dancer is often inspired by the immediate environment and is free to tell his or her own story, which makes for a very emotional performance. FDP has instructed and performed at juvenile detention centers, prisons, and community centers.
