Raising Awareness And Funds For The Treatment And Cure Of SCAR-15
The mission of Jack Bear Foundation is to raise public awareness and fund research for the development of a treatment and cure for Spinocerebellar Ataxia Recessive Type 15 (SCAR-15). This rare, degenerative, genetic disorder impacts the cerebellum and is characterized by progressive loss of coordination of hands, gait, speech, eye movement, and developmental delay. A subset of patients also has epilepsy. Common therapies to address symptoms include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and feeding therapy. There is currently no recognized cure. After several years of specialist appointments and medical testing, Matt and Carrie Pinkham’s young son Jack – affectionately known as “Jack Bear” – was finally diagnosed with SCAR-15. The Pinkhams founded the nonprofit to honor their son and to help others.
