Assisting Artists With Psychiatric Illnesses In Honing Their Craft

THE AWAKENINGS PROJECT is a grass-roots, all-volunteer initiative whose mission is to assist artists with psychiatric illnesses in developing their craft and finding an outlet for their creative abilities through art in all forms. The Awakenings Studio is a supportive art studio used for art exhibits, work spaces, writing workshops, play rehearsals, receptions, and more. THE AWAKENINGS PROJECT also works to raise public awareness and acceptance of the creative talents of people living with psychiatric disorders who work in the fields of fine art, music, literature, and drama. In the mid-1990s, THE AWAKENINGS PROJECT started as a single art show based on the belief that art fosters the healing power of creativity, support of community, development of competence, discovery of confidence, and sense of contribution.

Canine Therapy Corps

Free Animal-Assisted Therapy Programs For Individuals Facing Disabilities, Trauma Or Illness

Free Animal-Assisted Therapy Programs For Individuals Facing Disabilities, Trauma Or Illness

For over 25 years, Canine Therapy Corps’ therapy dogs have motivated individuals to regain strength, confidence, and independence as they persevere over traumatic injuries and devastating illness or live with chronic disabilities, both physical and emotional. Each of Canine Therapy Corps’ ongoing program sessions foster an atmosphere where successful interactions with therapy dogs provide participants with continuous positive reinforcement. These positive interactions motivate participants to face the repetitive, difficult, and often painful tasks necessary for healing—tasks which can shorten hospital stays and improve outcomes. Our dogs don't just help people feel better, they help them get better.

Nora Project

Teaching Empathy By Sparking Friendships Between Students And Their Peers With Disabilities

Teaching Empathy By Sparking Friendships Between Students And Their Peers With Disabilities

The Nora Project aims to normalize difference, demystify disability, and promote meaningful connections between students and their peers with disabilities. The Nora Project’s central program is an elementary-school curriculum that pairs children with disabilities ("Nora Friends") with students in participating classrooms. These students engage their Nora Friends in fun activities and learn all about them by interviewing those who know them best. They capture photographs and video footage of their Nora Project experiences on iPads and, at the end of the year, they compile what they’ve captured to create a mini-documentary sharing the story of each Nora Friend. The documentaries are debuted at a red-carpet film festival celebrating empathy, friendship, and all of the things that make us human . . . because everyone has a story.

Outdoor Mindset

An Outdoor-Focused Community For People Impacted By Neurological Challenges

An Outdoor-Focused Community For People Impacted By Neurological Challenges

In 2010, thirteen individuals came together inspired by a mutual friend’s determination to make something great come from a recent diagnosis of a brain tumor. Everyone shared a link to a neurological challenge (brain tumors, aneurysms, epilepsy, etc.). Their experiences ranged from personal diagnosis to supporting diagnosed family members and friends. The group also shared a passion for the outdoors, an unyielding enthusiasm for life, and a drive to overcome the hardship of a neurological challenge while focusing on quality of life. These commonalities inspired the idea of Outdoor Mindset (OM). Through the OM Community, Regional Meetup Groups, and the Adventure Scholarship, Outdoor Mindset relationships and experiences inspire hope, instill passion for maintaining outdoor lives, and empower people by support from others uniquely familiar with their experience.

Picking Me Foundation

#PickingMe Over Skin Picking

#PickingMe Over Skin Picking

Almost losing her leg to Dermatillomania because of her compulsive skin picking, Lauren McKeaney turned her decades of anguish into answers and created the PICKING ME FOUNDATION.  The Skin Picking Disorder is a body-focused repetitive behavior where a person picks, scratches or digs into their skin in an attempt to improve perceived imperfections, but which often results in tissue damage, discoloration, infection, or scarring. The PICKING ME FOUNDATION is dedicated to raising awareness about Dermatillomania and inspiring acceptance about this mental illness for sufferers, supporters, and medical and educational professionals.
