13thirty Cancer Connect

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

The mission of 13thirty Cancer Connect is to help adolescents and young adults (AYAs) impacted by cancer live their very best lives – today! Founded after the death of 18-year-old Melissa Sengbusch in 2001, 13thirty Cancer Connect bridges the gap for AYAs with cancer, ages 13-30, who often get caught in the middle of pediatric and adult medicine. We provide essential peer support programs for AYAs with cancer, both virtually and in-person, in order to meet their unique needs and connect them with others who "get it." With a strong focus on fitness and nutrition, expressive arts and meaningful social interaction, we are making a difference for AYAs with cancer by diminishing isolation, enhancing quality of life, and heightening awareness for this underserved population of cancer patients.

Granting Wishes, Resources, And Community To Adult Cancer Fighters

3 Little Birds 4 Life is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that grants wishes to adults – ages 25 to 55 – currently fighting cancer. The experience-based and daily life wishes include salon days, shopping trips, concert tickets, home repairs, etc. Ashley Swip founded the organization in tribute to her brother Tyler, who passed away from cancer. Before Tyler’s death, Ashley provided the perfect day for him so he could live life as if he had never been diagnosed with cancer: a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game where he got to sit in the press box, meet the players, and enjoy the game. Ashley named the nonprofit after Bob Marley’s “3 Little Birds” song, which includes lyrics that Tyler loved: “Don’t worry about a thing … ‘cause every little thing gonna be alright.”

Blue Hat Foundation

Raising Awareness About Colorectal Cancer In Underserved Communities

Raising Awareness About Colorectal Cancer In Underserved Communities

Founded by a single mother who was raising five children when she was diagnosed with colon cancer and lost her car and home during her fight against the disease, THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION is founded on unconditional support and compassion for people fighting colorectal cancer. Our mission is to provide education, information, and free screenings for colorectal cancer to minority and medically underserved communities. THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION started as a single event – “Blue Hat Bow Tie Sunday" – at one church in Chicago. The program is now in 15 churches and promotes “education through participation,” by asking the congregation to wear blue in honor of someone who is fighting or passed away from colorectal cancer. In addition to the Sunday events, THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION raises awareness about the disease’s signs, as well as shares stories of personal experience, through speeches, podcasts, articles and community partnerships.

CAST Water Safety Foundation

To Prevent Childhood Drowning And Create Stronger Swimmers, Sooner

The CAST Water Safety Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on expanding access to the Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) method in both Chicago, IL and New Orleans, LA. For over 50 years, ISR has been the method that gives children ages 6 months to 6 years of age the skills and confidence they need to swim, float, and self-rescue. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1-4. CAST offers scholarships to help offset the cost of ISR swim lessons – with a focus on assisting children of teachers, first responders, nurses, and military families, as well as low-income families and families living with special needs and disabilities. CAST also provides full tuition assistance to instructors who would not otherwise be able to afford the cost of training. Originally attracted to ISR lessons to help keep her young daughters safe in and around the water, Liz Huber founded CAST in order to share this potentially life-saving and positive experience with as many families as possible.

Compass To Care

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

COMPASS TO CARE CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides access to life-saving cancer treatment for children with cancer whose parents cannot afford transportation to the hospital. We carry out this mission by scheduling and paying for all travel and lodging to get children to the hospital where they can receive the best cancer care. By taking the travel burdens off a family, they can focus on what is most important, their child. In 1974, Michelle Ernsdorff-May was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 14 months old. With no treatment available near her Iowa home, her parents took her 200 miles to the Mayo Clinic. Michelle founded COMPASS TO CARE in honor of the emotional and financial struggle her parents endured traveling for her cancer treatment for almost two years. COMPASS TO CARE has supported 375 children in 10,018 cancer-related trips for more than 1,467,194 miles traveled to hospitals and 20,766 days of cancer treatment.

Cycle Forward

Getting Tampons And Sanitary Pads Into The Hands Of Women Who Struggle To Afford Them

Getting Tampons And Sanitary Pads Into The Hands Of Women Who Struggle To Afford Them

A high school junior, Sophie Draluck founded Cycle Forward after learning about women’s lack of access to menstrual hygiene products overseas and in our own country. Cycle Forward’s mission is to both provide feminine hygiene products to women and girls who struggle to – or cannot – afford them and to generate awareness about access, equity and other issues related to menstruation. The nonprofit organization collects monetary donations to fund bulk purchases of tampons and sanitary pads to be distributed directly to women and girls in need through several local charitable partners (homeless shelters, food pantries, etc.). They also collect unopened boxes of tampons and pads. So far, Cycle Forward has donated more than 15,000 tampons and pads to women and girls in need!

Ele's Place

Peer Support For Grieving Children and Teens After The Death Of A Loved One

Peer Support For Grieving Children and Teens After The Death Of A Loved One

Ele's Place is a healing center for grieving children and teens (ages 3-18) after the death of a parent, sibling or someone else close to them. Our vision is that no child grieves alone. Each week, hundreds of grieving children and teens find a warm and welcoming place to meet new friends who really understand how they feel in age-appropriate, peer-support group programs. Art and play-based activities help our children and teens identify their feelings and gain coping skills that will last a lifetime. Following the death of their daughter, Betsy and Woody Stover saw that their three children were grieving the death of their sister in a different way than they were as adults. After much grief research, they determined that peer support – from kids who had experienced the death of someone close to them – was the best way for their children to learn to cope with their feelings of grief, sadness, anger, and loss. Since that time, Ele’s Place has served more than 30,000 children across Michigan.

The Invictus Project was founded by two army veterans who – after returning home from multiple deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq – found themselves struggling with everyday life and contemplating suicide; they created this organization to give others in the same situation a fighting chance at a higher quality of life.

MedWish works with a range of healthcare providers (hospitals, medical equipment companies, nursing homes, etc.) to recover medical surplus they can no longer use because of insurance regulations, hospital inventory systems, renovations and equipment updates. MedWish has recovered more than 5 million pounds of medical surplus from nearly 120 U.S. hospitals, keeping these lifesaving items out of landfills and putting them in the hands of people in need in more than 110 countries worldwide. Outdoor Mindset

An Outdoor-Focused Community For People Impacted By Neurological Challenges

An Outdoor-Focused Community For People Impacted By Neurological Challenges

In 2010, thirteen individuals came together inspired by a mutual friend’s determination to make something great come from a recent diagnosis of a brain tumor. Everyone shared a link to a neurological challenge (brain tumors, aneurysms, epilepsy, etc.). Their experiences ranged from personal diagnosis to supporting diagnosed family members and friends. The group also shared a passion for the outdoors, an unyielding enthusiasm for life, and a drive to overcome the hardship of a neurological challenge while focusing on quality of life. These commonalities inspired the idea of Outdoor Mindset (OM). Through the OM Community, Regional Meetup Groups, and the Adventure Scholarship, Outdoor Mindset relationships and experiences inspire hope, instill passion for maintaining outdoor lives, and empower people by support from others uniquely familiar with their experience.

Triage Cancer

Free Cancer Survivorship Education To Help People Move Beyond Diagnosis

Free Cancer Survivorship Education To Help People Move Beyond Diagnosis

TRIAGE CANCER is a national, nonprofit organization that provides quality information about the practical and legal issues that may impact individuals after a cancer diagnosis and their caregivers. Armed with that information, individuals not only get the big picture, but they can better decide what needs to be handled first and what can wait until later – the very definition of triage. We provide educational speakers, webinars, conferences, blogs, videos, printable materials, and other resources regarding issues like insurance, employment, finances, psychosocial support, and more. We also host www.CancerFinances.org, which is a website that helps people navigate finances after a cancer diagnosis.

Twist Out Cancer

SHARE. CONNECT. HEAL.

SHARE. CONNECT. HEAL.

TWIST OUT CANCER is founded on the belief that when you share, the world opens up. TOC provides psychosocial support for individuals touched by cancer through creative arts programming. Our signature program, Brushes with Cancer, is a unique celebration of survivorship and hope that pairs those touched by cancer with talented artists to create an original work reflective of the cancer journey. TOC also encourages and leads workshops ("Twist Shops") that provide individuals an opportunity to share their "twist on cancer," such as lessons learned, fighting strategies and new perspectives.

Under Her

Providing Free Feminine Care Products To Disadvantaged Women

Providing Free Feminine Care Products To Disadvantaged Women

Under Her is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that distributes basic feminine care products – including bras, sanitary napkins, body soaps, and pocket calendars to track menstrual cycles – to vulnerable and disadvantaged girls, women, and female-identified people. These products are included in our free Vanity Bags. Our goal is to promote positive, transformational social change by building healthy self-esteem, sisterhood, and emotional support in our communities. Shaye Brooks and her two daughters founded Under Her when they became aware of how difficult it was for many girls and women to obtain basic personal care products. Their vision is that no person suffers the indignity of being unprepared for feminine hygiene issues.

Zac's Zoo

Providing Brand-New Stuffed Animals To Comfort Children In Turmoil

Providing Brand-New Stuffed Animals To Comfort Children In Turmoil

Zac’s Zoo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that comforts children in turmoil by providing them with brand-new stuffed animals. Zac’s Zoo collects the animals and delivers them to local fire and police departments. The first responders then give the comforting animals to a child in crisis, such as in an ambulance or in a violent domestic situation. Zac’s Zoo was formed when 7-year-old Zac Cohen organized a stuffed-animal drive to comfort the many children who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. Sadly, at the age of 20, Zac was killed in a motorcycle accident. In tribute to Zac’s efforts throughout his life to serve others, his mother officially founded Zac’s Zoo to help restore a sense of calmness, security, and comfort to children facing adversity.
