13thirty Cancer Connect

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

The mission of 13thirty Cancer Connect is to help adolescents and young adults (AYAs) impacted by cancer live their very best lives – today! Founded after the death of 18-year-old Melissa Sengbusch in 2001, 13thirty Cancer Connect bridges the gap for AYAs with cancer, ages 13-30, who often get caught in the middle of pediatric and adult medicine. We provide essential peer support programs for AYAs with cancer, both virtually and in-person, in order to meet their unique needs and connect them with others who "get it." With a strong focus on fitness and nutrition, expressive arts and meaningful social interaction, we are making a difference for AYAs with cancer by diminishing isolation, enhancing quality of life, and heightening awareness for this underserved population of cancer patients.

Battle Buddies

Providing A Buddy And A Break For Children Battling Pediatric Cancer

Providing A Buddy And A Break For Children Battling Pediatric Cancer

BATTLE BUDDIES is a nonprofit that seeks to raise the spirits of pediatric cancer patients in metro Chicago by pairing them with local young adult volunteers, who meet with the young patients on a biweekly basis. Our mission is to provide a break from the hardships and stress involved in battling cancer and allow the children to hang out and kick back with a buddy. During these interactions, partners can color, play games, read books, and talk. Founded by five seniors in high school who have all been closely touched by cancer, BATTLE BUDDIES aims to distract the children from the pain of treatment through mentorship, admiration, and friendship.

Blue Hat Foundation

Raising Awareness About Colorectal Cancer In Underserved Communities

Raising Awareness About Colorectal Cancer In Underserved Communities

Founded by a single mother who was raising five children when she was diagnosed with colon cancer and lost her car and home during her fight against the disease, THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION is founded on unconditional support and compassion for people fighting colorectal cancer. Our mission is to provide education, information, and free screenings for colorectal cancer to minority and medically underserved communities. THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION started as a single event—“Blue Hat Bow Tie Sunday"—at one church in Chicago. The program is now in 15 churches and promotes “education through participation,” by asking the congregation to wear blue in honor of someone who is fighting or passed away from colorectal cancer. In addition to the Sunday events, THE BLUE HAT FOUNDATION raises awareness about the disease’s signs, as well as shares stories of personal experience, through speeches, podcasts, articles and community partnerships.

Compass To Care

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

COMPASS TO CARE CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides access to life-saving cancer treatment for children with cancer whose parents cannot afford transportation to the hospital. We carry out this mission by scheduling and paying for all travel and lodging to get children to the hospital where they can receive the best cancer care. By taking the travel burdens off a family, they can focus on what is most important, their child. In 1974, Michelle Ernsdorff-May was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 14 months old. With no treatment available near her Iowa home, her parents took her 200 miles to the Mayo Clinic. Michelle founded COMPASS TO CARE in honor of the emotional and financial struggle her parents endured traveling for her cancer treatment for almost two years. COMPASS TO CARE has supported 375 children in 10,018 cancer-related trips for more than 1,467,194 miles traveled to hospitals and 20,766 days of cancer treatment.

Cycle Forward

Getting Tampons And Sanitary Pads Into The Hands Of Women Who Struggle To Afford Them

Getting Tampons And Sanitary Pads Into The Hands Of Women Who Struggle To Afford Them

A high school junior, Sophie Draluck founded Cycle Forward after learning about women’s lack of access to menstrual hygiene products overseas and in our own country. Cycle Forward’s mission is to both provide feminine hygiene products to women and girls who struggle to—or cannot—afford them and to generate awareness about access, equity and other issues related to menstruation. The nonprofit organization collects monetary donations to fund bulk purchases of tampons and sanitary pads to be distributed directly to women and girls in need through several local charitable partners (homeless shelters, food pantries, etc.). They also collect unopened boxes of tampons and pads. So far, Cycle Forward has donated more than 15,000 tampons and pads to women and girls in need!

Care Coordination For Medically Complex Babies

LITTLE HEROES LEAGUE helps babies born with multiple health challenges achieve their best life outcomes by providing care coordination that begins as early as birth in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and continues through hospital discharge to home. Together with the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, we are implementing a first-in-the-country program to provide care coordination for infants with medical complexity and their families to address this critical need in the hospital, at home, and in the community. An affiliated organization of Lurie Children’s, LITTLE HEROES LEAGUE was founded by the parents and grandparents of Livi, who spent over 150 days in the ICU in her first year of life spread over four visits that required three heart surgeries (two open heart), one intestine surgery, intensive vision and hearing tests, numerous sedations, and countless therapies.

An Outdoor-Focused Community For People Impacted By Neurological Challenges

In 2010, thirteen individuals came together inspired by a mutual friend’s determination to make something great come from a recent diagnosis of a brain tumor. Everyone shared a link to a neurological challenge (brain tumors, aneurysms, epilepsy, etc.). Their experiences ranged from personal diagnosis to supporting diagnosed family members and friends. The group also shared a passion for the outdoors, an unyielding enthusiasm for life, and a drive to overcome the hardship of a neurological challenge while focusing on quality of life. These commonalities inspired the idea of Outdoor Mindset (OM). Through the OM Community, Regional Meetup Groups, and the Adventure Scholarship, Outdoor Mindset relationships and experiences inspire hope, instill passion for maintaining outdoor lives, and empower people by support from others uniquely familiar with their experience.

Our special therapy animals—which include comfort dogs, mini therapy horses and mini therapy donkeys—visit Chicagoland hospitals, nursing homes, retirement communities, libraries, hospice centers, homes for the disabled and at-risk youth, domestic violence shelters, and other off-site locations. Our teams of handlers and mini therapy horses/donkeys train for at least six months before being registered as an official therapy team.

Limiting The Impact Of Bullying Through Education And Community-Based Prevention

TAKE NO BULLYING is a nonprofit organization founded by a bullying-and-suicide-attempt survivor and a group of local business owners, professionals and parents who were ready to join the fight against bullying. With more than 60% of bullying instances going unreported, the primary goal of TAKE NO BULLYING is to decrease the number of bullying cases. Through education and community programs, they seek to raise awareness about how to identify, address and prevent bullying. They have already provided more than 1000 “No Bullying” stickers to businesses across the country to display in their windows.

Triage Cancer

Free Cancer Survivorship Education To Help People Move Beyond Diagnosis

Free Cancer Survivorship Education To Help People Move Beyond Diagnosis

TRIAGE CANCER is a national, nonprofit organization that provides quality information about the practical and legal issues that may impact individuals after a cancer diagnosis and their caregivers. Armed with that information, individuals not only get the big picture, but they can better decide what needs to be handled first and what can wait until later—the very definition of triage. We provide educational speakers, webinars, conferences, blogs, videos, printable materials, and other resources regarding issues like insurance, employment, finances, psychosocial support, and more. We also host www.CancerFinances.org, which is a website that helps people navigate finances after a cancer diagnosis.

Twist Out Cancer

SHARE. CONNECT. HEAL.

SHARE. CONNECT. HEAL.

TWIST OUT CANCER is founded on the belief that when you share, the world opens up. TOC provides psychosocial support for individuals touched by cancer through creative arts programming. Our signature program, Brushes with Cancer, is a unique celebration of survivorship and hope that pairs those touched by cancer with talented artists to create an original work reflective of the cancer journey. TOC also encourages and leads workshops ("Twist Shops") that provide individuals an opportunity to share their "twist on cancer," such as lessons learned, fighting strategies and new perspectives.
