13thirty Cancer Connect

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

Empowering And Connecting Young Adults With Cancer

The mission of 13thirty Cancer Connect is to help adolescents and young adults (AYAs) impacted by cancer live their very best lives – today! Founded after the death of 18-year-old Melissa Sengbusch in 2001, 13thirty Cancer Connect bridges the gap for AYAs with cancer, ages 13-30, who often get caught in the middle of pediatric and adult medicine. We provide essential peer support programs for AYAs with cancer, both virtually and in-person, in order to meet their unique needs and connect them with others who "get it." With a strong focus on fitness and nutrition, expressive arts and meaningful social interaction, we are making a difference for AYAs with cancer by diminishing isolation, enhancing quality of life, and heightening awareness for this underserved population of cancer patients.

Battle Buddies

Providing A Buddy And A Break For Children Battling Pediatric Cancer

Providing A Buddy And A Break For Children Battling Pediatric Cancer

BATTLE BUDDIES is a nonprofit that seeks to raise the spirits of pediatric cancer patients in metro Chicago by pairing them with local young adult volunteers, who meet with the young patients on a biweekly basis. Our mission is to provide a break from the hardships and stress involved in battling cancer and allow the children to hang out and kick back with a buddy. During these interactions, partners can color, play games, read books, and talk. Founded by five seniors in high school who have all been closely touched by cancer, BATTLE BUDDIES aims to distract the children from the pain of treatment through mentorship, admiration, and friendship.

Community Currency

Foreign Change For Change

Foreign Change For Change

Co-founded by a group of diverse, passionate Northwestern University students, COMMUNITY CURRENCY (CC) seeks to chip away at educational inequalities by optimizing on the fact that more than 90% of international travelers return to the United States with leftover foreign currency. Here’s how it works: (1) CC collects foreign currency in international airports, college study-abroad offices, and banks; (2) the foreign currency is converted into American money; and (3) that money directly supports disadvantaged Chicagoland children’s participation in summer camps at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago. We dream to ensure that the zip code you’re born in doesn’t determine the story of your life.

Compass To Care

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

Helping Children With Cancer Travel To Treatment

COMPASS TO CARE CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, provides access to life-saving cancer treatment for children with cancer whose parents cannot afford transportation to the hospital. We carry out this mission by scheduling and paying for all travel and lodging to get children to the hospital where they can receive the best cancer care. By taking the travel burdens off a family, they can focus on what is most important, their child. In 1974, Michelle Ernsdorff-May was diagnosed with kidney cancer at 14 months old. With no treatment available near her Iowa home, her parents took her 200 miles to the Mayo Clinic. Michelle founded COMPASS TO CARE in honor of the emotional and financial struggle her parents endured traveling for her cancer treatment for almost two years. COMPASS TO CARE has supported 375 children in 10,018 cancer-related trips for more than 1,467,194 miles traveled to hospitals and 20,766 days of cancer treatment.

Academic And Hockey Opportunities For Low-Income Children In First Grade And Up

Inspired by one of the co-founder’s experience of coaching hockey for low-income inner-city children in West Garfield Park, INNER-CITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (ICE) was established to help low-income children obtain educational and hockey opportunities not otherwise available to them. ICE offers educational scholarships to Chicago area students (1st grade through college) who actively play hockey, demonstrate financial need and a strong personal character, maintain a 2.5 GPA and a satisfactory disciplinary record, and do 80 hours of community service during the summer. Each scholarship recipient receives a pre-screened mentor who provides academic, professional, and personal guidance/assistance, so that the student-athlete is empowered to make positive life choices. ICE also provides free hockey practices twice a week—along with an hour of mandatory academic tutoring before each practice—for more than 150 girls and boys in the Chicagoland area.

Care Coordination For Medically Complex Babies

LITTLE HEROES LEAGUE helps babies born with multiple health challenges achieve their best life outcomes by providing care coordination that begins as early as birth in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and continues through hospital discharge to home. Together with the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, we are implementing a first-in-the-country program to provide care coordination for infants with medical complexity and their families to address this critical need in the hospital, at home, and in the community. An affiliated organization of Lurie Children’s, LITTLE HEROES LEAGUE was founded by the parents and grandparents of Livi, who spent over 150 days in the ICU in her first year of life spread over four visits that required three heart surgeries (two open heart), one intestine surgery, intensive vision and hearing tests, numerous sedations, and countless therapies.

Teaching Empathy By Sparking Friendships Between Students And Their Peers With Disabilities

The Nora Project aims to normalize difference, demystify disability, and promote meaningful connections between students and their peers with disabilities. The Nora Project’s central program is an elementary-school curriculum that pairs children with disabilities ("Nora Friends") with students in participating classrooms. These students engage their Nora Friends in fun activities and learn all about them by interviewing those who know them best. They capture photographs and video footage of their Nora Project experiences on iPads and, at the end of the year, they compile what they’ve captured to create a mini-documentary sharing the story of each Nora Friend. The documentaries are debuted at a red-carpet film festival celebrating empathy, friendship, and all of the things that make us human . . . because everyone has a story.

To Become Chicago’s First Tuition-Free, Inner-City Boarding School For Underserved Children

Having opened its doors this year for its first class of middle schoolers, the RYAN BANKS ACADEMY will serve as a day school before seeking to become Chicago's first tuition-free, inner-city, co-ed residential boarding school for underserved children in grades 7th through 12th. RYAN BANKS ACADEMY, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, combines a rigorous academic program with an integrated social emotional education to launch the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and world-changers. The curriculum is based on experiential and expeditionary adventure learning with a focus on STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math—as well as extended field trips that allow the students to explore new environments and cultures. The school also heavily emphasizes the importance of social emotional learning, family involvement, and psychosocial support services for students. The school’s name honors Ryan Banks—a happy-go-lucky, 12-year-old boy—who was killed by gunfire just outside his home. Years later, his social worker assembled a team of community leaders to found the RYAN BANKS ACADEMY, so that underserved children in unsafe neighborhoods and from traumatic backgrounds could receive a high-quality education in a stimulating and protected environment.

XS’s mission is to provide Chicago’s underserved youth with an enriching safe haven and positive academic/athletic pathway to college through community-based tennis programs, summer camps, and academic support. 100% of XS student-athletes in the high-performance after-school tennis program have graduated from high school; 100% have earned access to college; and 100% have received full college-tennis scholarships. Founded by Kamau Murray—who was introduced to tennis in a free after-school program on Chicago’s South Side and then went to college on a full tennis scholarship—XS reaches more than 3,000 kids across numerous underserved Chicago communities.
